Bwala: The Soul and Passion of Angola

BWALA, is a word from the Kimbundu language, spoken in Angola, in the area of Luanda, Malanje,
Bengo and surrounding areas whose meaning is Village or simply “Ghetto”.

BWALA's design was inspired by the typical and traditional design of the Samakaka and Pensador, one of the most beautiful sculptures of Tchokwe origin and a referential symbol of Angolan culture.

Samakaka is a traditional fabric from Angola, specifically from the Mumuílas people, originally from the province of Huíla, in the south of the country, which carries a living narrative of Angola's history and a unique expression of creativity, due to its vibrant and captivating colors. Samakaka is known for its quality and beauty, with resistant, soft cotton that is perfect for making clothes, accessories and decorations.

Samakaka is famous for its geometric patterns and bright color palette, which include combinations such as: Black, White, Red and Yellow.

Deep Meaning of Colors:

Red
Represents the blood shed in long years of war in Angola, the country that has already achieved independence, peace and national reconciliation.

Black
Symbolizes mourning for lives lost and families broken during conflicts, evoking reflection and grief.

White
Represents hope and the daily search for peace and happiness, leaving behind the pain of the past.

Yellow
Symbolizes the ongoing struggle for abundance, prosperity and economic reconstruction, challenges faced by Angolan society.

This cloth is often used for folk costumes and in dances such as Kizomba and Semba.
